Rival Sparring Glove Weight Guide

In UK gyms, 16oz is the accepted standard for adult sparring. The additional weight carries deeper foam that compresses on impact, reducing the force transferred to your partner. Always follow your coach's requirements.

Your Weight Recommended Weight Notes
Under 65kg (under 10st 3lb) 16oz standard; 14oz at some gyms Coach approval required; 16oz still preferred
65–89kg (10st 3lb – 14st) 16oz UK gym standard
Over 89kg (over 14st) 16–18oz Extra protection for partners

V-Strap vs Lace-Up: Which Closure Should You Choose?

The V-Strap is Rival's proprietary hook-and-loop closure that pulls from two opposing angles, locking the wrist into the padding structure. It is the practical choice for fighters who train without a partner to tie laces, and it provides wrist support that rivals traditional lace-up models.

Lace-up models like the RS100 provide the most locked-in, customised fit around the wrist. They are preferred by many serious fighters for structured gym sessions and competition preparation, but require a training partner or coach to fasten them. If you train solo, the V-Strap is the practical choice without meaningful compromise.

Frequently Asked Questions

The RS series, including the RS80V Impulse and RS11V Evolution, are built specifically for sparring. They use softer, multi-layered foam to protect your training partner and feature the V-Strap closure for wrist stability.
No. Rival engineers the RS series for sparring and the RB series for bag work. Using sparring gloves on a heavy bag compresses the softer foam over time, making them unsafe for future sparring sessions.
For adult sparring in UK gyms, 16oz is the standard requirement. Lighter fighters (under 65kg) may be permitted to use 14oz at their coach's discretion. Never use 10oz or 12oz gloves for adult sparring.
The V-Strap pulls from two opposing angles to lock the wrist in place, making it practical for solo training. Lace-up models provide the most locked-in fit but require a training partner to tie them.
Rival gloves suit beginners who are serious about training. The RS80V Impulse is the most accessible entry point. The V-Strap closure is more practical if you train without a partner to tie laces.
The RFX Guerrero is Rival's professional fight glove. Available in 8oz and 10oz. Not suitable for sparring or daily training. Built for professional fights.
The HDE-F uses high-density EVA foam for a firmer, more structured feel. The SF-H uses soft foam combined with horsehair for a more traditional puncher's feel. Both are professional fight gloves and should not be used for sparring or daily bag work.
