Rival Sparring Glove Weight Guide

Choose your sparring glove weight using your body weight and your coach or gym’s requirements. This table covers adult sparring; junior boxers need coach-led guidance.

Never use 8oz, 10oz or 12oz gloves for adult sparring. A model being sold in a particular weight does not make that weight suitable for your sparring session. Check the available options on its product page.

Hook-and-loop or lace-up Rival gloves?

The RS80V uses Rival’s angled hook-and-loop Ergo Strap. The RS11V uses the V-Strap Wrist Lock 2 system, while the RS100 is lace-up. These are different fastening systems, so check the exact model rather than assuming every Rival strap glove uses V-Strap.

Hook-and-loop is practical when you need to fasten your own gloves. Laces allow adjustment around the hand and wrist but normally need someone to tie them. Neither closure makes a bag or fight glove suitable for sparring: intended use depends on the complete model.

Which Rival gloves are for sparring?

The RS80V Impulse, RS11V Evolution and RS100 Professional are sparring models. The RS80V uses an Ergo Strap, the RS11V uses V-Strap Wrist Lock 2, and the RS100 uses laces. Choose the model and fit that suit you, then follow your coach’s glove-weight rules.

Should I keep separate gloves for bag work and sparring?

Yes. Keep your sparring pair for partner work and use a separate pair for bags and pads. The RB5 and RFX-Guerrero-V Bag Gloves HDE-F are dedicated bag models and must not be used for sparring.

What weight Rival sparring gloves should I buy?

For adult sparring, use 16oz as standard below 90kg. Under 65kg, 14oz is an exception only where your coach or gym permits it. At 90kg and above, 18oz is the standard recommendation. Always follow your coach or gym’s requirements. Never use 8oz, 10oz or 12oz gloves for adult sparring.

What is the difference between Rival strap and lace-up gloves?

Strap models fasten with hook-and-loop. The RS80V uses Ergo Strap; the RS11V uses V-Strap Wrist Lock 2. The RS100 uses laces, which allow adjustment around the hand and wrist but normally require help fastening. Choose by fit, intended use and how you train.

Are Rival boxing gloves suitable for beginners?

Choose according to what your sessions involve, not experience level alone. For sparring, consider a sparring model such as the RS80V and follow your coach’s weight requirements. For bags and pads, choose an appropriate bag glove. Professional fight gloves are not an all-purpose first pair.

Which Rival gloves are for professional fights?

The RFX-Guerrero Pro Fight HDE-F and Pro Fight SF-H are professional fight models. They are different from the RFX-Guerrero-V bag glove and are not sparring gloves. For professional bouts, gloves are supplied by the promoter; confirm the requirements with your coach and promoter.

How do the RFX-Guerrero Pro Fight HDE-F and SF-H differ?

The Pro Fight HDE-F uses layered foam with high-density EVA. The Pro Fight SF-H combines foam with quilted horsehair. Both are lace-up professional fight models. Do not confuse either with the separate RFX-Guerrero-V bag glove.
