How to Choose the Right Boxing Gloves

Selecting the correct boxing gloves depends on your training type, weight, and experience level. Different gloves are engineered for specific demands — from bag work to sparring to competition — and using the right glove ensures proper protection, technique development and long-term hand health.

Training Gloves (General Use)

Training gloves are designed for mixed sessions that include bags, pads and conditioning drills. Most adults use 12oz–14oz depending on bodyweight and experience. Heavier gloves offer more padding, which benefits beginners and heavier athletes.

Sparring Gloves

Sparring gloves prioritise partner safety, using softer, energy-dispersing foams. Recommended sparring weights:

  • Under 67kg → 14oz
  • 67kg+ → 16oz

Some advanced boxers use 18oz for increased protection.

Bag Gloves

Bag gloves use dense knuckle padding and a firmer wrist structure to withstand repetitive impact from heavy bag and pad work. They provide clear feedback and reduce over-compression injuries. Bag gloves should not be used for sparring.

Amateur Gloves

Amateur gloves follow weight-class rules:

  • Under 67kg → 10oz
  • 67kg+ → 12oz

These gloves are available in red and blue. Athletes cannot compete in their own gloves, but should train and warm up in amateur-style gloves for familiarity.

Pro Fight Gloves

Professional boxing gloves use either compact multi-layer foam or horsehair padding. Assigned weights are 8oz or 10oz depending on weight class and commission rules. These gloves are for licensed competition and fight-week pad work, not sparring or bag sessions.

Velcro Boxing Gloves

Velcro gloves are ideal for general training. Their quick closure makes them perfect for pads, bag work and fitness boxing. They provide strong wrist support and are the most practical option for everyday gym use.

Lace-Up Boxing Gloves

Lace-up gloves offer the most secure wrist alignment and customised fit. They are commonly used for sparring and professional preparation due to superior stability. Best for advanced athletes or those needing precise wrist support.

Boxing Glove Weight Guide

Under 67kg

Some brands offer 18oz sparring gloves for increased protection during heavy partner rounds.
