Sparring Gloves

Sparring gloves are engineered to manage impact safely during partner drills and controlled sparring rounds. They use softer, more energy-dispersing foams than bag or training gloves, reducing concussion risk and protecting both boxers’ hands. At Fight Gear, we stock sparring gloves with reliable padding density, wrist stability and consistent shock absorption from trusted brands including Rival, Sting, Cleto Reyes and Hit N Move.

How to Choose the Right Sparring Gloves

Sparring gloves are engineered with softer, energy-dispersing padding designed to protect both you and your partner during controlled rounds. Unlike bag gloves, which use dense padding for impact conditioning, sparring gloves must remain soft and evenly cushioned to safely absorb force. Choosing the correct weight and padding structure is essential for proper technique, injury prevention and gym safety.

Sparring Glove Weights

Sparring glove weight depends on the athlete’s bodyweight to ensure balanced protection:

  • Under 67kg → 14oz sparring gloves
  • 67kg+ → 16oz sparring gloves

Some advanced boxers or heavier athletes use 18oz for increased padding volume.
Note: These recommendations reflect common boxing gym standards and practical coaching guidance.

Padding Structure

Sparring gloves use multi-layer foams designed to compress slowly on impact. This helps:

  • Reduce peak force
  • Protect your knuckles and wrists
  • Protect your sparring partner
  • Maintain safer, controlled sparring intensity

Dense bag padding is not safe for sparring because it transfers too much force.

Wrist Support & Glove Fit

A good sparring glove should offer:

  • Stable wrist alignment
  • A natural fist shape
  • Secure thumb attachment
  • Even knuckle padding distribution

For the best wrist stability, many fighters choose lace-up gloves for sparring. Velcro can be used, but lace-up provides superior support.

Do Not Spar in Bag Gloves

Bag gloves harden over time due to repeated impact. Once this happens, they become unsafe for partner work. Always keep sparring gloves separate from your bag gloves.
